Q&A with Stylist Jenece Amella

I have known and worked with Jenece Amella since 2013. For those of you who have had the privilege of meeting Jenece, you know her bubbly personality, sense of humor, and professionalism are an asset to any commercial set. I know my subjects are in great hands with Jenece while she has them in her chair or is going over wardrobe with them; warming them up for a wonderful experience on set. Jenece is a talented commercial stylist, specializing in hair and makeup, as well as wardrobe styling. She has a team of stylists who work with her and her decades of experience shines through imagery and video alike. Today, she is sharing her insights and insider tips:

1. What's the biggest difference between commercial makeup and everyday makeup?

Commercials require flawless makeup under bright studio lights and high-definition cameras, while everyday makeup is about enhancing natural beauty and feeling comfortable. Everyday makeup is light and airy and should enhance your beauty without looking like you're wearing a lot of makeup.

2. What's your favorite product to use on set, and why?

That's a tough one! But if I had to pick, I'd say a good primer is a game-changer. It keeps everything in place, prevents shine, and ensures the makeup looks fresh for hours.  Setting Spray is also my go-to.  It’s the final step to keep the makeup in place and doesn’t require too much touch-up.  It’s like hairspray for the face.

3. What are some common mistakes people make with their makeup?

One big mistake is using the wrong foundation shade. It can make your face look cakey or washed out. Another one is over-applying products. Remember, a little goes a long way.

4. What's your best advice for someone who wants to improve their makeup skills?

Practice makes perfect. Experiment with different techniques and find what works for your face shape and features. There are also tons of great makeup tutorials online that can teach you new tricks.

5. Any makeup tips for our readers who want to achieve a camera-ready look?

Prep your skin beforehand with a good moisturizer and primer. This will create a smooth canvas for your makeup and help it last longer. Don't forget to blend, blend, blend! Harsh lines are a no-no for camera. Finally, take your time and have fun with it. Makeup should be a way to express yourself and boost your confidence.

6. What are some emerging trends you're seeing in commercial makeup?

There's a big move towards a more natural, dewy look in commercials. Skin is still flawless, but it has a healthy glow. We're also seeing a lot of experimentation with color and texture, especially for editorial and beauty campaigns.

7. What does a typical day look like for a commercial wardrobe stylist?

It can be quite varied! Often, there's a lot of prep work beforehand – understanding the brand message, and communicating with the photographer and other creatives. Then comes the fun part – pulling clothes, shopping for specific items, and making sure everything fits the vision perfectly. On set, it's all about last-minute adjustments, ensuring the wardrobe looks polished throughout on the talent.

8. How do you approach dressing actors for commercials compared to, say, a movie?

Commercials are shorter, so the outfit needs to make a strong first impression. It has to be clear, concise, and visually communicate the brand or product effectively. Movies allow for a more nuanced approach, where the clothing reflects the character's personality and story arc.

9. What are some challenges you face as a commercial wardrobe stylist?

Time is always a pressure! We often have tight deadlines to source, style, and fit everything. Another challenge is working within budget constraints. But that also pushes us to be creative and find ways to achieve the desired look without breaking the bank.

10. What are your favorite tips for someone who wants to develop their personal style?

Experiment! Don't be afraid to try new things and see what makes you feel confident. Take inspiration from fashion icons, celebrities, or even everyday people you see on the street. But most importantly, find what flatters your body type and reflects your personality.

11. Any secrets you can share about creating a cohesive and impactful wardrobe for a commercial?

Color theory plays a big role! We use color to evoke emotions and subtly communicate the brand message. Additionally, we pay close attention to silhouette and proportion to create a visually balanced look. It's all about the details, from the right accessories to the perfect hairstyle that complements the outfit.

12. What are some upcoming trends you see in commercial wardrobe styling?

There's a growing emphasis on sustainability and ethical fashion choices. We're seeing more commercials featuring vintage and pre-loved clothing. I am also noticing a more athleisure and relaxed feel. Additionally, there's a move towards gender-fluid dressing, which is exciting!
